Anatomy Division

Mission:

  • Teach Anatomy, Embryology and Functional Neuroanatomy to medical students, physician assistants and other allied health students
  • Collaborate with clinical departments to provide anatomical instruction to house staff and provide clinical departments teaching opportunities to medical students
  • Develop innovative new approaches to Anatomy teaching
  • Conduct research and procure peer-reviewed funding

History and Affiliations:

  • Prior to 1998: The Anatomy faculty/staff held appointments in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy
  • 1998: The Program of Gross Anatomy was created. The Program in Gross Anatomy was placed under the Department of Academic Affairs. Faculty appointments were held in Departments in Neurology and Neuroscience, Radiology and Surgery
  • 2010 to 2014: The Program in Gross Anatomy moved to the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology
  • 2015 to date: Program in Gross Anatomy moved to the Department of Radiology
  • 2017: The Anatomy Division was created under the Department of Radiology 

Highlights:

  • Renovation of the space in the Gross Anatomy Lab in 2004
  • Plastination unit was installed in 2007
  • Functional Neuroanatomy Resource (FNAR) for teaching in the Brain and Mind course was developed by the Anatomy Faculty and Staff
  • Faculty won several major teaching awards:
    • The Siegel's Family Faculty (the most prestigious teaching award in Weill Cornell Medicine)
    • First Year Teaching Award
    • Second Year Teaching Award
    • Excellence in Teaching in Human Structure & Function and Excellence in Teaching in Brain & Mind courses Awards at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York and Qatar
  • The Anatomy Division has maintained a very strong global collaboration by supporting and training several Anatomy lecturers from Weill Bugando and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College in Tanzania
  • Coordinates the teaching activities in the Anatomy Division at Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar since 2004

Future Plans:

  • Develop additional online teaching resources-iBooks, FNAR, HSF edit: for use both at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York and Qatar
  • Continue with research collaborations with our colleagues in the Department of Radiology and other clinical departments
  • Increase the number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals
